There are two types of general contractor licenses offered in the city, and you may apply for one or both of them, depending on the type of work you plan to do:

Since Kentucky’s counties and cities have such a wide variety of specifications when it comes to their unique ways to process general contractor licenses, we will be focusing on the largest city in the state, Louisville. When applying for your general contractor license in Louisville, you will have two types of licenses to choose from:

  • Building Type A: For contractors with the objective of acquiring multiple permits for single or multi-family dwellings. 
  • Building Type B: For contractors whose goal is only to obtain a single building permit.

You may be interested in applying for one or both of these licenses, depending on the sort of work you plan on doing once you obtain them. The application process is the same for both licenses. Simply indicate Type A, Type B, or both on your application. There are some qualifications to meet before applying, which are as follows:

Education & Experience

There are no formal educational or prior experience requirements to obtain your general contractor license in Louisville. However, the Type A license does require anyone holding such a license to complete 6 credit hours of continuing education each year before the license can be renewed.

Other than that, those seeking to start a career in construction should generally be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or the GED equivalent. For those with an interest in pursuing their education beyond high school, it may be helpful to consider obtaining a degree in architecture or engineering.


Louisville does not require general contractor license applicants to pass an exam at this time. However, other counties in the state may, so if you find yourself in a place that does require examination, you can likely expect a written exam along with some type of fee.

Occupational License Number

On your application, you must provide an occupational license number. These can be obtained through the Louisville-Jefferson County Revenue Commission.

Proof of Unemployment & Workers Compensation Insurance

You must provide proof that you or your company has adequate unemployment and workers compensation insurance. For workers compensation insurance, this can be accomplished via a certificate obtained from your insurance provider, who must be licensed to do business in the state of Kentucky. For the unemployment insurance, you will be asked to sign an affidavit certifying that you are in compliance with Louisville’s unemployment insurance codes.

If you do not have any employees to insure, then you will need to provide a signed affidavit stating that you have no one working for you.

Proof of Liability Insurance

You must provide proof via a certificate that your commercial general liability insurance policy has a minimum coverage of $250,000 per person or $500,000 aggregate. The Louisville Metro Department of Codes and Regulations must be listed as the certificate holder.

Louisville General Contractor Licensing Fee Overview

Each license type has a separate fee to be paid annually as you renew your license each year. The specific fees are as follows:

  • Building Type A: $125 annual fee
  • Building Type B: $50 annual fee

If you are applying for both types of licenses, then you will be required to submit both fees.
