Sludge, biological materials, and harsh chemicals present in wastewater can be corrosive. And may build up in cracks, crevices, and dimples in the surface of countertop materials. As such, WWTP lab tables and workbenches should be smooth and non-porous to avoid saturation or bacterial accumulation.
Wastewater treatment plant labs naturally deal with a lot of water during the process of wastewater testing, necessitating that their furniture is water-resistant and hardy against regular moisture exposure and bacterial buildup. All three of these materials provide advanced water resistance, are easy to clean, and provide smooth non-porous surfaces where bacteria won’t collect or build.

A wastewater treatment plant laboratory typically requires chemical-resistant casework, fume hoods or biosafety cabinets. Along with instrument benches for spectrophotometers and titrators, sample storage refrigeration, and corrosion-resistant countertops like epoxy or phenolic resin, and stainless steel. Epoxy resin and phenolic resin are both excellent for wastewater labs because they are non-porous, chemical-resistant, and easy to sanitize. Stainless steel is preferred when bacterial control is the top priority, since it resists biofilm growth and is fully impervious to moisture. The right choice depends on the specific contaminants and chemicals being tested in your facility.
Wastewater lab casework should be SEFA-tested and NSF-aligned. SEFA 8 governs casework durability and chemical resistance for laboratory environments, while NSF/ANSI standards apply to surfaces in contact with potable water systems. WWTP lab casework is built with extra emphasis on moisture resistance and bacterial control. Surfaces must tolerate constant water exposure, sludge contact, harsh sanitizers, and corrosive chemicals like sodium hypochlorite without degrading or accumulating biofilm. Standard casework materials like plastic laminate and wood are not rated nor recommended for this level of continuous moisture and chemical exposure.
